Des Ashton
Des Ashton was born in Australia. He moved to NZ as a child and has also lived in Aitutaki Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, UK, Singapore, and USA. He is a citizen of NZ and Australia.
Des holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Canterbury University, is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and Member of the Institute of Directors.
He joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as a university cadet in 1969. He trained in aeronautical engineering and management at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, UK in 1973 and graduated as an RNZAF pilot at Ohakea in 1977.
Des retired from the RNZAF in 1993 after postings throughout NZ and overseas, including with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and in the NZ Embassy Washington DC.
From1993 to 2008 his employment included but was not limited to:
- General Manager of Safe Air Limited (now Airbus NZ) while the company grew to 350 staff – exporting aviation and engineering services to 20 countries.
- General Manager (Aircraft Heavy Maintenance) in Ansett Australia and Air New Zealand based – including export work to many countries. 1600 staff 100+ aircraft
- Owner of consultancy, Ashton Technologies, specialising in aviation, technology, and defence for overseas and NZ customers.
- Board directorships including Port Marlborough, Marlborough Electricity, Cuddon Engineering, Potatopak, Flightcell International, and others.
- Chief Executive Officer of Port Marlborough and Marlborough Airport.
From October 2008 to 2016, he was Deputy Secretary of Defence (Acquisition) in the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Working with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and industry, his team was responsible for providing 3.5 billion dollars of major capital capabilities for the NZDF including ships, aircraft, helicopters, weapons, military vehicles etc and upgrades to those capabilities.
In 2016, Des retired from MOD and re-activated Ashton Technologies whose customers have included aviation and defence technology companies – L3Harris, Leonardo, General Atomics (through NZ Company Hawke Eye), SAFRAN, Lufthansa Technik, Hensoldt, Supacat, and others.
He was a council member of Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and remains a director NZ Aeronautical Trusts Limited.
His honorary appointments have included Chairman of the Defence Industry Committee of New Zealand, Vice Chairman of the Aircraft Industry Association Engineering Division, and roles with the Royal Aeronautical Society including President of the NZ Division. He is also a pro-bono mentor for small businesses.
Des was awarded the United States Meritorious Service Medal in 1992 and he was made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to defence and aviation in 2017.
Des is an ageing squash player and enjoys gardening native plants, conchology, travel, drinking wine and occasional jogging to (partly) compensate for the latter.
